Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counselling?
Counselling provides a safe, confidential space where you can discuss difficult feelings or issues you’re facing. By exploring these problems and their connection to past experiences with an independent, unbiased person, you can find more effective ways of coping on a day-to-day basis and ultimately move past the challenges.

Will everything I say be confidential?
Yes, confidentiality begins from your initial enquiry and continues throughout all of your sessions. However, there are rare instances, both professionally and legally, where confidentiality may need to be broken. This would occur if I believe you or someone else is at serious risk or if there is evidence of certain illegal activities. In such cases, I would aim to discuss this with you before contacting the relevant authorities.

Will you make my problems go away?
Counselling is not a magic solution that can instantly resolve your problems. Instead, I will work alongside you, supporting you to explore the emotions and origins of your issue. I believe that you already hold the answers within and have the potential to overcome your challenges. My goal is to provide a non-judgmental, supportive environment to help you gain insights and make informed decisions for your future.

I’m worried it might actually make me feel worse?
Counselling can sometimes bring up difficult and painful emotions, especially at the start. While this may feel challenging, it is an important part of the healing process. Over time, as you gain deeper insight and understanding, you will begin to feel better and process much of the work outside the therapy room as well.

Where would we meet?
If we meet in person, sessions will take place in my counselling room located in central Newbury. Alternatively, I offer online sessions via Zoom if that is more convenient for you.

How often would we meet?
We would typically meet once a week, although we could meet more frequently if we both feel that would be beneficial. For counselling to be effective, a regular commitment and cooperative effort from both the client and the counsellor are essential.

What will happen in the first session?
In our first session, we’ll explore working together and discuss the problem you’d like help with. We will also agree on a contract in accordance with the BACP ethical framework, outlining what to expect, including confidentiality, cancellation policy, and boundaries.
